Learning is Everywhere During the Holidays
The holiday season can be a magical time filled with lights, laughter, love and LEARNING! It’s a great time to help young children learn in fun and meaningful ways. All children, from newborn and up are like little sponges, soaking up everything around them. Everyday holiday moments can build skills in social, emotional, language, fine motor, gross motor, and cognitive development.
The best part? You don’t need fancy toys or big plans to support their learning! All it takes is a few extra minutes to slow down and be more present and in the moment. No need to plan a special activity, make the activity you are already doing special. It’s as easy as talking about lights, smells, music, wrapping parcels and making cookies!
For example, it takes time to learn how to hold a mixing spoon just right and stir cookie dough. Let a child try on their own first before you offer any helpful advice. We know this can be hard to sit back and just watch, but it can also be very rewarding to see just how much a child can figure out on their own! It might be messy but that is also a learning experience.
From decorating the house to sharing meals to preparing for guests, these moments can teach something new. As you celebrate this season, remember that your child is growing in ways big and small. By including your child in everyday activities in a joyful way you are giving them the best gift of all --- a love of learning that will last a lifetime.
